If you haven’t been paying attention to the lower half of the girls bracket in the AA state championship playoffs, you’re missing one inspiring playoff run. The Aberdeen Golden Eagles entered the playoffs as a #14 seed with nothing but tough road games in front of them. They had to open up in round one against a #3 Pierre Govs Girls team that had dominated all season, and also beat the Golden Eagles 3-1 in the first match of the regular season. But Keyanna Stillman found the only goal of the match in the waning minutes to pull of their first major upset of these playoffs. Head Coach Merle Aske was excited, but not surprised postgame saying he knew his girls had it in them to play a tough team and find a way to win. The Golden Eagles were able to find more offense in their 3-1 victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt and pull of yet another surprising win. There is certainly something to be said about how dangerous a team can be playing with momentum, and that is exactly what Aberdeen has done seemingly trapping lightning in a bottle. They will face their toughest test yet on Tuesday evening as they face an undefeated Rapid City Stevens team on the road. Can they keep this dream run going? It will certainly be exciting to see.
