The fall season across Kentucky means more than coloring leaves and falling temperatures. Many grassy areas become home for a metal-framed message. This is ripe political signage season. Traditional yard signs promoting candidate A or B are apt to be visible the next three weeks. Lee Steele is code enforcement director for Lexington. He said some of the political signs do not HAVE to come down November sixth. “They are permissible on private property for an infinite amount of time. They can be there all year long, as long as they’re on the private property domain,” said Steele. Steele said what’s not allowed is political signage in medians or right of ways. The code enforcement director noted 19 workers in his department pull signs daily. He said that sometimes they can be moved to a legal spot. “If we find a political sign in the right of way we’ll remove it and move it across into the private property as we figure the private owner did not know the placement allowances,” said Steele. Steele said there can be line-of-sight difficulties along roadways and that can prompt sign removal. The Code Enforcement administrator said year-round advertisement signs are often a bigger issue when it comes to placement. Steele said about 200 of those signs are pulled a week. But, political signs are typically not a big issue. As Steele added they “rarely run amok.” ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
