We are one step away from absolute mayhem in New York City. The Mets and Yankees are set to begin their respective League Championship series this week. Each team is four wins away from reaching the World Series, perhaps against each other which would mark the first time they met each other in the Fall Classic since the Bombers’ 26th championship in 2000. “I don’t even know what the city would do,” Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo said on Friday afternoon. “Man, it would almost just explode. It would be amazing, so definitely, if it comes to that point, we will enjoy the heck out of it, and it would be an amazing time to be in the city and to be a part of these two organizations and see who wins.” Each team has potential roadblocks in the way with two formidable opponents — although one is significantly better than the other — in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians, however, the prospect of a Subway Series has never been more real. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the two New York teams are +266 to meet in the World Series. The slight boost in odds come from the Mets series as they are underdogs to defeat the star-studded Dodgers with a series price of +150 while the Yanks are heavy favorites at -215 to represent the American League. “It’s going to be exciting,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said of the two organizations being four wins away from the World Series. “The Mets have had an incredible season. I know they didn’t start the way they wanted to but they got a great manager over there in Carlos Mendoza, who I’ve had a chance to be around for a few years in the Yankees organization.” Should the two teams advance, this installment of the Subway World Series would be significantly different than the last. In 2000, the Yankees were the League’s top spenders at $92 million in payroll — approximately $13 million more than the Amazin’s — and were in the midst of a dynasty capturing their fourth World Series title in four years. This time around, the Mets would own the biggest wallet as they’re atop the league with at $317 million and the Yanks haven’t been the poster boy for postseason success since Derek Jeter donned the pinstripes. 2009 was both the last time the Bombers hoisted The Commissioners Trophy and appeared in the World Series. The similarity between the two potential World Series is most of the pressure would fall on the Yankees. The Mets entered the season with most expecting a rebuilding year as they traded Hall of Fame pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer at the 2023 deadline. The Bombers enter with the weight of an uncharacteristic championship drought on their shoulders and the pressure of winning with their only guaranteed year of Juan Soto — who is a free agent and the Mets have been long rumored to make a play for this upcoming winter. The city of New York could be buzzing within a weeks time as a Subway Series is only eight wins away.
