Jack Walker’s 19-yard field goal as time expired proved the difference as the Pomona-Pitzer football team edged University of Redlands 10-7 in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday evening at Merritt Field in Claremont. Pomona-Pitzer vaulted to the top of the SCIAC Sun Division standings with the victory. Redlands (1-4 overall, 1-2 in SCIAC) grabbed the lead when Jayden Mckey tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cal Breen with 8:05 remaining in the opening quarter. Pomona-Pitzer (3-2, 2-1) leveled the score on a 10-yard touchdown run by Brennan Dragomer with 2:33 left in the first period. The score remained that way until the final stages of the fourth quarter. Pomona-Pitzer’s Joshua Yen intercepted a pass by Mckey at the Redlands 30 with 1:15 left in the clock. The Sagehens moved the ball down to the 1, setting up Walker’s game-winning kick on the final play of the game. Quinten Wimmer ran for 56 yards on 13 carries and also caught five passes for 61 yards to lead the way for Pomona-Pitzer. Calel Olicia-Aramboles finished with 91 yards on 21 carries, and Breen had five receptions for 82 yards for Redlands. Redlands travels to Thousand Oaks to play Cal Lutheran in a SCIAC game Saturday, Oct. 19 at William Rolland Stadium. CHAPMAN HANGS FIRST LOSS ON C-M-S Claremont-Mudd-Scripps got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon, but Chapman took control in the second period and cruised to a 41-13 victory over the Stags in a SCIAC game at Zinda Field in Claremont. C-M-S (4-1 overall, 2-1 SCIAC) grabbed a 10-0 lead after Justin Edwards scored on a 2-yard run with 4:41 in the first quarter and Rich Brutto kicked a 38-yard field goal with 9:19 remaining in the second period. Then it was all Chapman, which outscored C-M-S 41-3 the rest of the way to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play. Tyler Pacheco ran for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also threw a 19-yard touchdown to Brendon Mendoza in the fourth quarter. The Panthers scored touchdowns on special teams (60-yard punt return by Amir Adams in the third quarter) and on defense (15-yard fumble return by Kaulin Post in the fourth). Joey Yellen passed for 143 yards and a touchdown for Chapman, which took sole possession of first place in the SCIAC Surf Division standings. Edwards finished with 53 yards on 16 carries for C-M-S. Brutto added a 40-yard field goal for the Stags in the third quarter. C-M-S hosts La Verne in a SCIAC game Saturday, Oct. 19 at Zinda Field. LA VERNE FALLS AT HOME Gabe Landless scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to lead visiting Cal Lutheran to a 31-17 victory over La Verne in a SCIAC game Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium in La Verne. Landless scored on runs of 1 and 17 yards for Ca Lutheran (1-4 overall, 1-2 in SCIAC), and Jayden Casey extended the lead to 21-0 with a 1-yard run in the second period. La Verne (0-5, 0-3) battled back. Masen Uribe scored on a 1-yard run late in the second quarter and added a 58-yard scoring run early in the third period to help get the Leopards within 21-14. But Cal Lutheran quickly regained momentum. Casey tossed a 23-yard touchdown to Desmond Thompson, and Daniel Burgos kicked a 49-yard field to give the Kingsmen a 31-14 advantage heading into the final period. Casey passed for 83 yards and added 98 yards on 10 carries for Cal Lutheran. Landless finished with 51 yards on eight carries. Brian Rudden passed for 190 yards for La Verne, and Jimmy Rumsey caught six passes for 84 yards. Uribe and Arthur McCown combined to rush for 134 yards on 20 carries for the Leopards. La Verne travels to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, Oct. 19, for a SCIAC game at Zinda Field in Claremont.
