Three people, including a child, died in a solo SUV crash on the 15 Freeway 20 miles north of Baker on Saturday afternoon. At around 4:30 p.m., Barstow’s California Highway Patrol dispatch center began receiving calls of a black SUV that overturned into the median of the northbound freeway in the Mojave Desert, southwest of the Nevada state line. The San Bernardino County Fire Department was already on scene when CHP officers arrived. A paramedic confirmed three fatalities, according to Officer Shane Hernandez, a public information officer with the Barstow CHP office. One male and two females were in the black 2013 Toyota 4Runner. One of the females was identified as a 9-year-old, according to Hernandez. The SUV was registered out of Santa Monica. “For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle lost control, and overturned an unknown number of times. As the vehicle continued out of control, it collided with a concrete drainage culvert,” said Hernandez. It was unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, which was still under investigation, Hernandez said. The identities of those killed had not been made public as of Saturday evening.
