MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Groups fighting for clean air and water held an environmental justice rally in southwest Memphis on Saturday. The rally was hosted by the Memphis Community Against Pollution. Environmental groups came together to celebrate their victories in Alonzo Weaver Park. This is where southwest Memphis galvanized its fight and its victory over the Byhalia pipeline. A spirit of praise energized this "Environmental Justice NOW Rally", sounding the alarm in the fight for clean air and clean water. "We are mobilizing our community at this moment so that they are aware but also moving us toward gaining more people power," MCAP executive director KeShaun Pearson said. Non-profit hosts walk-a-thon to raise awareness about domestic violence This rally was more a celebration of how the Memphis Community Against Pollution and its partners are chalking up victories but not forgetting new battles that threaten the quality of Memphis' drinking water. "We're celebrating the closure of Sterilization Services of Tennessee, a known polluter, someone who was pushing ethylene oxide and suffocating us and causing a lot of cancer in this community," Pearson said. "We're very fortunate here in Memphis, Tennessee to have 2,000-year-old drinking water, but we're finding more and more that there's contamination headed toward our wells," said Sarah Houston, executive director of Protect Our Aquifer. MCAP is now focusing on the impact of Elon Musk's xAI supercomputer. "It is attracting other large energy vampires with these crypto-currency mining facilities and these other types of data centers," Pearson said. Many at Saturday's rally were frustrated by industries that don't seem to care. "It seems as though we are fighting it on our own," said Toni Jackson, Vice President of the Westwood Neighborhood Association. "Each and every day we ask questions but we're not getting any answers."  MCAP is looking for volunteers. You can click here for more information.
