One man was killed and another wounded on a busy Chinatown street Saturday evening, a block away from police headquarters. Police said the two were shot about 7:50 p.m., near  Madison St. and St James Pl., with tall apartment buildings and restaurants surrounding the scene. Both of the victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, with one of the victims initially in critical condition from a gunshot to his neck, while the other victim was shot in the buttocks, police sources said. NYPD officers and detectives gather evidence outside the Hamilton Madison Houses on Madison St. in Manhattan, where two people were shot, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024. (Jeff Bachner/New York Daily News) Police said there no arrests as of Saturday night, and details on what led to the gunfire were still being investigated. The manager at a nearby pizza shop told the Daily News that his workers had heard of a fight in one of the nearby businesses shortly before shots were fired. It was unclear if the scuffle was related to the gun violence. The shooting left some local residents on edge. Oscar Chen, 27, whose grandmother lives in a building on Catherine St., called the incident a “scary experience.” ”It’s a little scary, especially for an elderly person, especially late at night,” said Chen. It left him questioning his grandmother’s safety, particularly given her penchant for evening walks. “It might be a little bit better if I go or if someone else goes with her, especially now that it gets dark a little earlier,” he said, vowing to “be a little more cautious” from now on.
