According to Fox 2 Detroit’s Dan Miller, the Detroit Lions and running back David Montgomery have agreed to a two-year extension to keep him under contract through the 2027 season. At this point, there are no additional details on the deal. UPDATE: The Lions have made it official. UPDATE 2: Per Adam Schefter, it’s a two-year, $18.25 million extension with $10.5 million guaranteed. Back in 2023, the Lions signed Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract after talks broke down with Jamaal Williams (who ended up signing a three-year, $12 million deal with the New Orleans Saints). Montgomery would go on to have a fantastic 2023 season. For just the second time in his career, he eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards (1,015) and he produced career highs in both yards per carry (4.6) and rushing touchdowns (13). This year, he’s proven his worth through just four games. In Week 1, he was dominant in overtime, producing 45 rushing yards in a single drive on the way to the Lions’ game-winning score. Through four games, he has 271 rushing yards, 94 receiving yards, and four rushing touchdowns. “Yeah, man, he’s our tone-setter,” quarterback Jared Goff said after Week 1. “He’s a leader, he’s the guy when the game is on the line we want to find him. You remember last year in the playoff game we threw it to him on I think first or second down there. So, man, he’s as valuable to our team as anybody.” This week, Montgomery joined the “Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams,” and spoke about just how honored he felt to play for the Lions and coach Dan Campbell. “Coach Campbell is a special and a different dude,” Montgomery told Adams. “The way that I was raised, and the things that I came from, and the things that I experienced, I wouldn’t want to be playing for any other coach.”
