ENCINITAS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- According to the San Diego County Sheriff's department, a suspect was arrested Friday in connection to a string of arson incidents that have caused significant damage in coastal North County, including the cities of Encinitas and Carlsbad. Winston Cristobal, 27, was cuffed around 2:30 p.m. after deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station responded to reports of a man starting a fire near North Coast Highway 101 and La Costa Avenue. He's now facing charges of suspected arson, vandalism and trespassing. PHOTOS: Northern lights illuminate San Diego sky amid geomagnetic storm Investigators from the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit revealed that Cristobal is suspected of deliberately igniting eight separate fires between Sept. 21 and Oct. 11, all occurring near two construction sites located between Highway 101 and the train tracks. The total estimated damage from these incidents exceeds $700,000. Sheriff’s officials expressed gratitude to various agencies that assisted in the investigation, including the Carlsbad Police Department, California State Parks, and the fire departments from Encinitas and Carlsbad, as well as the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
