(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand TRENTON — After doing just about everything it could to lose the game, the Northern Burlington football team staged a remarkable comeback at Trenton on Saturday in one of the wildest wins imaginable. The result was an 18-17 overtime victory for NBC when coach Jule Dolci made the gutsy decision to roll the dice and go for the win with a two-point conversion. It was a very close call, but sophomore quarterback Brent Walulak showed what he’s made of by just squeezing into the end zone on a sweep around right end. One ref called it a touchdown and another indicated Walulak had come up just short, but the TD call stood to finish an exhausting game that left both teams at 4-3 on the season. Following the two-point conversion, many of the Trenton defensive players stayed on the field with dazed looks of frustration. The fact the game even got to overtime in front of a large crowd on Trenton’s Homecoming Day was a miracle in itself. After Elmer Godoy had booted a 31-yard field goal to put the Tornadoes ahead 13-10, in the fourth quarter, Trenton appeared to have everything under control when NBC was backed up on its own 5 yard line with less than two minutes remaining. What followed was a nightmare for Trenton as a blown coverage allowed Walulak to hook up with a wide-open Edson Raymond on a 76-yard pass to the 22 yard line. The Trenton defense, which had come on strong in the second half, did keep the Greyhounds out of the end zone from there, but what it couldn’t do was prevent Bailey O’Malley from kicking a game-tying 25-yard field with 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Trenton went first in overtime and rolled into the end zone on a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Keyshawn Warthen. This set the stage for NBC scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Matt Caloiaro and the game-winning, two-point conversion run by Walulak. On the flip side to NBC’s thrilling comeback was the negative it missed several opportunities to put Trenton away earlier in the game. On its second possession, NBC scored on a 14-yard run right up the middle by Walulak, who raced into the end zone untouched. Also in the first half, Trenton was held to a paltry 31 yards in total offense. The fact NBC was unable to score again until the dying seconds of the fourth quarter was a combination of two things. One was numerous penalties against the Burlington County team, which very much kept its playoff hopes alive with the win. The other — and by far the most important — was NBC committed a whopping five turnovers on four interceptions and a fumble. One of those interceptions resulted in an 85-yard pick six by Nazir Scott that allowed Trenton to tie the score at 7-all in the second quarter. Also intercepting passes for Trenton were Timothy Fisher, Warthen and Zavonn Minney.
