Upper Main Street was a bustle of conversation and activity Saturday as anticipation built for the eighth annual Sunrise Rotary Shot Ski, gearing up to break another world record for the longest consecutive shot ski, Breckenridge, Colorado, the usual competitor. Surely this is the hottest Shot Ski in Park City, and did you smell the smoke? Conversations flitted between groups, squinty-eyed and delayering in the bright midday sun, each finding their reserved place in the double row of shot skis — over 551 this year bolted together down Main. The event, a fundraiser for Sunrise Rotary’s grant program, had sold out days before, but spots on a waitlist could be reserved on a walk-up basis. A couple from Salt Lake City, coincidentally spending their anniversary weekend in Park City, had stumbled on the event and joined the waitlist.Strangers chatted during the 30 minute buffer between check-in’s closing window and the actual shot-taking moment. A husband and wife from Heber City came for the first time, grabbing VIP tickets at the top of Main for the best seat in the house. They’d heard about the Shot Ski through an email newsletter from High West Distillery, the event’s main sponsor and whiskey supplier. Paul Beckmann, a local resident, was back for his fifth year. He said part of what keeps him coming back is an opportunity to hang out with friends and meet new people.“I’m a skier at heart, ever since I was a kid,” Beckmann said. “This is just a great way to celebrate, support the community, be involved in the community. … It helps me take life not so serious. It’s important to have fun.”Once enough of the spaces were filled, it was time to pick up the ski and fill each glass with either High West Distillery’s Double Rye Whiskey, apple juice or, for some, a mix of both. Then there was the awkwardness of leveling it despite height differences — one experienced woman brought along her stool in anticipation of a spill.A shot of High West Distillery whiskey is poured. Shot takers faced each other, cameras at the ready as announcers counted down from five. Slowly, the ski tipped back and leveled again, glasses empty, and was lifted up with a cheer. Record broken, take that Breckenridge. The crowd dispersed, many to grab lunch or another drink on Main, and it’s till next year.Ticket holders find their spot and wait about 30 minutes before the shot on Saturday.
