Williams County burn restrictions now in effect
Oct 12, 2024
WILLISTON, N.D. (KXNET) — Williams County and Williston Emergency Management have updated the county Fire Emergency and Burn Restrictions to be in effect at all levels.
Williams County has experienced a very active fire season, and a State of Emergency was declared on October 8th. The new restrictions are being implemented as part of this state— primarily due to the recent wildfires and rapidly changing weather conditions. They include a total ban on open burning, including the ignition of fireworks.
Wildfires: How to help, where to find information
Below is a list of items that can no longer be burned under the current restrictions.
Leaves
Grass clippings
Garbage/pits
Construction debris
Fallen trees
Crop residue or hay ground
Sloughs
Campfires, bonfires, or recreational fires.
Personal cooking grills may still be used, but the area surrounding the grill/cooker must be cleared of all flammable objects (including debris or garbage) in a radius of at least three feet. Any agricultural burns, meanwhile, must be approved by the Fire Chief of the jurisdiction where the burn takes place.
Both motorized and wheeled vehicles — including pickups, cars, 4-wheelers, and motorcycles — are asked to stay on established roadways. Anyone who travels off-road for industrial or business reasons should carry fire extinguishers and normal firefighting equipment (such as shovels and water). Smoking should only occur in designated areas or inside closed vehicles.
The burn restrictions are effective immediately, and will last until November 30. To learn more about Burn Restriction and exemption or variance forms, visit this page on Williams County's website. More information on the area's local fire departments can also be found here.
