BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Halloween revelers always have a number of opportunities when it comes to getting dressed up, from Party City to those seasonal shops that seem to come around every year. But there’s another shop here in Bakersfield that’s been around for 44 years that caters to not just kids, but to the adults who want to have a little fun, too. Maybe that’s why Halloween is so popular – it’s an excuse to be somebody else for a night. Fantasy Frocks, on 17th Street, just west of F Street, has been banking on that silly urge for nearly half a century. Jennifer Keller started the shop in 1980. Daughter-in-law Breanna Keller is running it now. Breana says school plays, costume parties, Mardi Gras, New Year’s Eve, Christmas are all excuses for adults to play dress up, but the big one is that annual celebration of pumpkins, scary monsters and trick-or-treating we know as Halloween. "(Regular customers) will walk through here, they’ll talk with me, try to get ideas and we'll come up with the best thing for them," she said. It’s an election year, in case you haven’t noticed, but the number of rubber-mask candidates, always a favorite, is limited this year. Kamala Harris entered the race too late for Fantasy Frocks, but there are many of those old standbys, including slashers, monsters and superheroes. An emotional day of celebrating took place for new U.S. Citizens at Cesar E. Chavez National Park If you want to be Deadpool this year, hurry...the store is down to the last one. What really sets Fantasy Frocks apart are the mystery closets jam-packed with all sorts of vintage goodies. The store has everything from rubber masks to professional level stage makeup and hats galore. "Pirate hats, cowboy hats, the 20s, top hats, fun hats, sun hats," Keller said. "I feel like I’m starting to rhyme now and I’m not even trying." Fantasy Frocks is still going strong after 44 years. I guess you could say it's a place where they wear many hats.
