SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Candidates running to represent California's 49th congressional district are vying for voter support as the election quickly approaches. The district spans both coastal North County, San Diego and southern Orange County. Incumbent Democratic Representative Mike Levin, who is running for a fourth term in the district, is facing a challenge from Republican businessman Matt Gunderson. FOX 5/KUSI attended a forum at Mira Costa College in Oceanside Friday, where the two candidates went head-to-head on the issues. Meet the candidates running for Congress in San Diego County For the most part, both candidates were well-mannered and followed the rules during the hour-and-a half-long event, but the pair did trade jabs multiple times in front of a crowd of about 60 people. “There are big differences between my opponent and myself when it comes to our background, our experiences, and our values,” said Levin. His opponent and businessman – Gunderson – thinks the people of the district deserve change.  “When you tile down and talk about the issues that matter to people on the day-to-day basis, it's inflation, it's the border, it's things that Mike Levin is completely on the wrong side of,” Gunderson stated. He says he’s not a typical Republican, noting his pro-choice stance.  “Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare,' said Gunderson. "I’ve made that very clear. I oppose late term abortion. I support notification.” What to know about San Diego County’s Measure G “Roe v. Wade was the law of the land for 52 years and then it was undone by aAmy Coney Barret, who he [Gunderson] proudly supported to be a Supreme Court Justice," said Levin of his opponent. Aside from sharing some common ground on that issue, the two candidates took opposing stances on immigration and border security, the environment and climate change, as well as guns. “First of all, I'm a firm believer in the Second Amendment," said Gunderson. "And when we deal with this issue of gun violence, we have to realize it is not a gun problem, it is a people problem.” “I think it's fairly simple that more guns are not going to solve the gun violence epidemic in this country,"said Levin. "And yes, we have challenges with mental health just like every other developed nation, but we have a unique challenge with gun violence.” With election day fast approaching, a new poll shows Levin pulling ahead of Gunderson by 12-points. The two candidates have spent a lot of money combined in this race – more than $3.5 million, according to the latest information online from the FEC
