CONCORD, N.C. – A local man is still looking for answers after thousands of dollars worth of property were stolen from his Public Storage unit. Khalid Williams is still reeling from the loss of what he says are priceless items after his storage unit was broken into. “It leaves you feeling naked. It makes you feel vulnerable. It leaves you feeling hopeless,” Williams said.  “I had to come to grips within the first 5-7 days, being very emotional, knowing that unless they somehow were able to recoup everything that was taken from me, like ‘Khalid, you’re just not going to see some of these things again.'” Williams said his unit and 18 others were broken into at the Public Storage on Derita Road in Concord. He said thousands of dollars worth of items were stolen, including baseball cards, collectable comic books, and several gaming systems. “It’s just a whirlwind of emotional disaster at times,” Williams said. Williams said the property and the unit was insured for only $5,000, leaving him searching for answers on who is now liable for his stolen property. “There’s a lot of questions, none have been answered,” Williams said. We reached out to Public Storage about the issue, and they said they had no comment. When storing your property in a Public Storage unit, attorneys say it’s important to carefully review your contract and look for keywords like “liability,” which will tell you who is responsible if your property is stolen or damaged. Attorney Shawntae Crews said in cases like this, the liability could be on you, unless the storage unit company fails to properly secure the unit. “It’s best to have an attorney review the contract with you… and whatever you don’t understand, you can ask an attorney,” Crews said. As for Williams, he is left without his belongings and, even more valuable, answers. “Up until now, I’ve never received a follow-up call, I’ve never received even just the basic of answers,” Williams said.
