The Lake County commissioners recently declared “official congratulations” to the Lake County Captains after the Cleveland Guardians High-A affiliate won its second Midwest League title in franchise history. The Captains — who boasted a season record of 77-53 — last month triumphed over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a 9-4 victory at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake, marking a “sensational conclusion to an exciting championship series.” After falling in Game 1 of the series, the Captains rallied to win the final two games of the best-of-three set at home. The victory was propelled by a five-run sixth inning, which was highlighted by key contributions from right fielder Jonah Advincula, shortstop Angel Genao and first baseman Ralphy Velazquez. In a gesture honoring the team’s achievement, the Lake County Courthouse was lit blue following the accomplishment, officials noted. “As a community, we celebrate not only the success of the Captains but also the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship they represent,” said Lake County Commissioner John Plecnik. “This illumination is a symbolic gesture of our pride and support for the team and our commitment to fostering community spirit.” Commissioner Richard Regovich noted that the championship is a testament to the talented athletes and coaches who have worked tirelessly throughout the season. “Their dedication inspires us all, and we hope this celebration shines a light on their hard work and determination.” Commissioner John Hamercheck added, “Community events like this bring us together. We encourage everyone to reflect on the remarkable achievements of the Captains.” Another significant element of the team’s successful year is that Jen Yorko is the first female general manager to win a minor league championship. Yorko, a 2007 Lake Erie College graduate, started her Minor League Baseball career with the Captains later that year. During her tenure, she has worked to oversee ticket operations, merchandise, event planning, specialty-themed nights, school programs and Captains-charities events. In 2016, Yorko began serving as assistant general manager and was promoted to the GM position in 2019.
