Euclid senior citizens will be able to take advantage of those wishing to learn more about teeth, by having their teeth and dentures checked as well as being screened for cancer by students from Lakeland Community College. The students, from Lakeland Community College’s Dental Hygiene program, will be able to provide some basic services as well as give more information to seniors on taking care of their teeth in an event that is open to all senior center members, as long as they register for the event at the front desk. The yearly event will be Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Euclid Senior Center, 1 Bliss Lane, according to Programing Coordinator Monica Fetheroff, who added this is a way for seniors to access services they might not otherwise have. “We have been doing it for four or five years,” Fetheroff said. “We are really connected with the school, it’s a good screening day, it’s good for the students because it’s lots of hands-on (learning). “It’s kind of a big event because they go over information on fluoride treatments, check for oral cancer screening, cleaning teeth with a water pick and then everyone gets their mouths checked.” She said that many medical insurers might not cover dental and that it was convenient to have the students come to the seniors. She said the event also gives seniors more ideas on how to access care if needed. “The students are awesome and a couple popular dentists (will be there) from the Dental Hygiene program,” Fetheroff said. “I’ll tell you, a lot of health care plans don’t cover dental insurance. You can actually get your teeth cleaned at the Lakeland Clinic, either for free, or for a reduced fee. “It’s really good to clean your teeth, it’s a great preventive thing.” She expects to have at least 90 to 100 seniors take up the students on their offer and that she hopes it will raise more awareness of the realities that some seniors face when it comes to financing their medical expenses.
