A federal jury has found the son of former Rep. John Thompson of St. Paul guilty of drug and weapons charges in connection with a fatal car crash that killed five people last year, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced Friday. Derrick John Thompson (Courtesy of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office) Following a five-day trial in federal court, a jury found Derrick John Thompson, 29, of Brooklyn Park, guilty of one count of possessing a firearm as a felon, one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and one count of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger said in a press release. Evidence during the trial provided the following information, Luger’s office said: On June 16, 2023, a state patrol trooper saw a black Cadillac Escalade driving 95 miles per hour on northbound I-35W and then cut across four lanes of traffic to take the Lake Street exit. The trooper exited after the Cadillac which had subsequently run a red light at the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and East Lake Street, striking a Honda Civic that had a green light in the intersection. (Courtesy of the Dar Al Farooq Center) Law enforcement officers found Thompson sitting on the curb outside a nearby restaurant. The investigation showed that Thompson had rented the vehicle at the Minneapolis- St. Paul International Airport a half hour before the crash. When officers received a warrant to search the Cadillac they found a “black leather bag on the front passenger side floor that contained a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine, as well as three baggies containing more than 2,000 blue ‘M-Box 30’ fentanyl pills, a baggie containing an additional 14 grams of fentanyl powder, a baggie containing 35 grams of cocaine, and a digital scale.” Thompson’s DNA was found on the firearm, the fentanyl powder and the cocaine, according to evidence at the trial. In addition, his phone had dozens of texts referring to drug deals.
