EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An East Providence man was arrested after a confrontation with officers in his home earlier this week, according to authorities. Herlin Perry, 40, has been charged with carrying a weapon while intoxicated, domestic disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and four counts of possession of a large-capacity feeding device. Herlin Perry (Courtesy: East Providence Police Department) Officers were called to Perry's home Tuesday to investigate reports of a domestic disturbance. Police said the officers found Perry in an upstairs bedroom holding a semiautomatic pistol. Perry refused to drop the gun when asked and pleaded with the officers to shoot him, according to police. The officers struggled with Perry for several minutes before securing the loaded firearm and taking him into custody. Police said the officers discovered a loaded AR-15 sporting rifle in the bedroom, as well as several loaded large-capacity magazines lined up on an armchair. No one was injured, however, police said Perry was brought to the hospital after he threatened to harm himself. "This was a very dangerous and volatile situation," East Providence Police Chief Christopher Francesconi said. "If not for my officers' efforts to deescalate, this could've ended much differently." Perry has since been released on $10,000 personal recognizance pending his next court date, which is scheduled for January. He was also ordered to surrender his firearms, as well as undergo substance abuse and mental health counseling.
