BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Friday morning, 23-year-old Walter Brister tried to avoid our cameras as he walked with his attorney and his father, former NFL player "Bubby" Brister, after receiving 3 years probation instead of a 10-year prison sentence. His lawyer, John McLindon, said he wouldn't talk to us if we confronted Brister about receiving probation, but we pressed Brister anyway for a response to the sentence. "The family of the victim feels that you should have gotten prison time. Do you have any response to do you have any response to that?" asked reporter John Rupolo. Brister just shook his head and kept walking. In 2022, Brister was driving on Ben Hur Road near Burbank in Baton Rouge near LSU when he hit Jude Jarreau attempting to cross the street. The father of two died at the scene. Brister kept driving and later turned himself in to the police. Brister pleaded guilty in September to felony hit and run. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore released this statement Friday afternoon: "This was an obviously tragic and emotional case that has affected not only the lives of those involved but each of their family members and our community.  The Jarreau family was devastated by the loss of their loved one. Brister was arrested for felony hit and run with serous bodily jury and indicted for the same.  He pled guilty as charged.  Today the family provided the court with their impact statements after which the court deferred his sentence under the law and placed him under 3 years of supervised probation with many conditions as follows: Substance abuse evaluation; maintain counseling while on probation; follow any and all recommended treatment; 250 hours of community service work half of which is to be done on litter abatement;  he is to remain drug and alcohol free while on probation;  he is to complete the MADD victim impact panel and a drivers improvement program; he is to pay a fine of $5000  plus court cost.  The court ordered him, at the request of the family,  to speak with LSU Football team and other college students as to the impact and effects of drinking and driving.
