ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Last month the Village of Honeoye Falls sent out a letter to their residents as well as to the Town of Mendon residents who live in the fire protection district that they serve, saying they have made the choice to hire per-diem professional firefighters at the fire department. It has been an all-volunteer department since 1885. The Mayor of the village, Richard Miln, says that the volunteer base has gotten very small, and when you look at small villages like Honeyway Falls or the towns of Mendon, Lima, or Rush, they don't have a lot of people to draw from. He says volunteers nowadays have two jobs, maybe a family, and don’t have the time to dedicate to the vigorous training that comes with being a volunteer. Friday, Tyler Zavitz, the assistant fire chief at the Honeoye Falls Fire Department said things have so far been going smoothly, adding that these new per diem firefighters are professionals, saying it's been a fantastic experience so far. The mayor tells News 8 they are reviewing any and all feedback from residents and are appreciative of all the responses.  Suggestions can be sent to the mayor's office via postal mail at 5 East Street, Honeoye Falls NY or email at [email protected].
