Richard Strauss’ fanfare from his tone poem “Also sprach Zarathustra” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is inexorably linked to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” With timpani, trumpet, and other brass and percussion instruments featured, it is played as the sun rises at the dawn of the world. It was the first time the Strauss (1864-1949) piece had been used in a visual medium, but not the last; audiences have since heard it in more than a dozen movies and television episodes.
