Last month, Peace House launched their latest educational offering in collaboration with the Park City School District’s The Compass/Leisure Learning program. This free lecture series, taught by Peace House staff, covers a variety of topics designed to strengthen familial bonds. The goal is to engage family units and offer them a space to learn, grow and support one another. This month’s class, which will focus on preventing domestic violence, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at McPolin Elementary School. The class is free to attend and will be offered simultaneously in English and Spanish. While registration is not required, it is encouraged. You can register by visiting Peace House’s event page at mobilize.us/peacehouse.Courses in the Compass series will be taught by Emma Zevallos, Peace House’s director of prevention, and Erin Meottel, prevention coordinator.Zevallos explained that Peace House has offered classes through the Park City School District’s community catalog since 2018, covering a range of topics over the years.Last year marked the first time the courses were offered bilingually, said Zevallos, and this bilingual format has opened doors to a wider range of community members, providing valuable resources to help them enrich their lives.Zevallos encourages all members of the community to attend the Compass series courses. She noted that this month’s focus on domestic violence provides an important opportunity for everyone to gain a better understanding of the issue.“Sometimes people think it’s only physical violence,” said Zevallos. “But domestic violence is much more than that. It can be emotional, economic, psychological, technological. We want to raise awareness that domestic violence isn’t just physical.”Zevallos added that there are many different types of abuse, and understanding them is key to recognizing red flags and seeking help before situations escalate. The courses have garnered a positive response from participants.Zevallos said that a participant from the previous session expressed excitement for the class content, saying that she found it incredibly helpful and planned to share what she learned with her social circles.Classes are scheduled to be held once a month at McPolin Elementary School through December with the remaining schedule, as follows:Preventing Domestic Violence: Thursday, Oct. 24, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The Power of One Trusted Adult: Thursday, Nov. 21, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Cultivating Gratitude & Empathy: Thursday, Dec. 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.For any questions about upcoming courses, email [email protected].
