LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) –  Animal shelters across the country are at capacity, with many having to turn pets away or even euthanize them. We’re also seeing the same problem here in Kentucky and the problem will only get worse after Helene and Milton. Casey Woods, with the Lexington Humane Society, says while they are full, they are happy to help these pets in anyway they can. “We have committed to opening up space to at least a dozen cats and a dozen dogs,” said Woods. According to Anita Spreitzer with Paws 4 the Cause, statistics show close to one thousand dogs and cats are euthanized due to the crisis. And while they may be a no kill shelter, they are in need of foster parents. “Fosters are the life line of what we do,” said Spreitzer. “You just have to have a loving heart and an open home and understand that you’re going to take care of this pet. And help us find a good home for them.” The Lexington Humane Society is also in need of foster parents. “You’re not only getting an animal out and giving them a break from this environment that they didn’t choose,” said Woods. “You’re also opening up that space so another animal from the community can have that spot.” For Spreitzer it’s hard to see so many animals be stuck in a shelter. She says it is a hard time to be a rescuer. “Feeling desperate and defeated, because you know you can only do what you can do,” said Spreitzer. “And that there’s one more dog that comes in and you have to say no or you try to figure out something to help that animal.” Sprietzer says even if you can’t foster just donating items or money can go a long way.
