Kansas City coalition trying to get back to under 100 homicides yearly
Oct 11, 2024
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A new Kansas City coalition, KC United for Public Safety, held a news conference on Thursday, October 10. There, they detailed their lofty goal; returning to under 100 homicides in KC on the year.
The conference came just one day after four men and a teen were shot in Westport. Friday afternoon, Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) Sergeant Phil DiMartino said all five victims were still in the hospital.
"I don't have an answer, but somebody needs to figure this out because this is out of control," Gilded Chaos Vintage Owner Lindsey Kupper said about crime on Thursday.
Among others, the KC United for Public Safety coalition includes the city, KCPD, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and the non-profit KC Common Good.

Besides trying to get back to fewer than 100 homicides, KC United for Public Safety wants to reduce gun violence by 50% in five years and make a measurable economic impact.
"Sometimes it does feel like the days look long," KC Common Good CEO Klassie Alcine said during the news conference.
"But I'll tell you, it takes this collective effort and us being on the same page consistently communicating."
Alcine says the city can reduce its violence, but it'll be hard.
"I also know that our violence is impacting our ability to attract and retain talent. It's impacting our ability for businesses to come and move to Kansas City," she continued.
UMKC Assistant Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences Marijana Kotlaja says across the nation, one single homicide costs millions of dollars both directly and indirectly.
"When it comes to businesses, it has a tremendous impact in where businesses go and where they stay and it impacts shopping patterns as well," she said in an interview with FOX4 Friday.

Kotlaja says every time there's a homicide, in this city specifically, it decreases jobs the following year.
"Our estimates are from like five to 80%," she said.
"So that is quite a significant gap right there, but we also know with each homicide, there's about two fewer retail or service industries in that area as well, so it does, it has a direct relationship."
Thursday, KCPD Chief Stacey Graves said the department's working with business owners to make sure they get the extra patrols that they need.
"We also offer at each patrol division station, we have a community crime meeting," she said at Thursday's conference.
"That is KCPD hosted where we share crime data and also discuss with what people in the community that we serve within the boundaries of whatever patrol division that's taking place those specific crime issues."
All six patrol division stations have Community Interaction Officers that business owners can talk to about crime as well. The Community Interaction Officers are noted below for each station:
