MARION COUNTY, Ind. -- A portion of U.S. 52 will now be renamed after a fallen Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer. According to a news release From the Indiana Department of Transportation, U.S 52 between Davis Road and German Church Road will be named as the "Officer Breann Leath Memorial Mile." The memorial mile was unveiled on Friday afternoon, according to the release. This comes after House Concurrent Resolution 4 was passed earlier this year by the Indiana General Assembly. What to know ahead of the Delphi murders trial "It is an honor for INDOT to pay tribute to a fellow public servant who tragically lost her life while serving and protecting the people of Marion County," INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith said in the release. "We dedicate this stretch of road in Officer Leath's memory and to commend her tremendous commitment to public service." Leath was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance in April 2020. The release said that she served IMPD for three years and was a veteran of the Indiana National Guard and a former Indiana Department of Correction employee. "As stated in the resolution, Officer Leath 'was described by her fellow officers as being a dedicated and compassionate public servant and an example for all officers to follow...by honoring Officer Leath, we acknowledge her and her family's sacrifice and hold her contributions to the community in high esteem,'" the release said.
