GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — It is homecoming season for colleges, and, on Sunday, North Carolina A&T State University kicks off its homecoming, billed as "The Greatest Homecoming on Earth" and known to draw thousands of Aggies from all over the country. "You fly in, drive in, however you got to get here, by train, bus, a kite, however you got to get here to GHOE," said Tim Shropshire, an A&T alumnus. Ahead of the event, local law enforcement leaders came together to outline how they will be making sure everyone is safe. The university police department is teaming up with the Greensboro Police Department and Guilford County Sheriff’s Office as they prepare. “Our police department, our students, faculty and staff employees, we have gone across campus,” said University Police Chief Jack Moorman. “We have looked at potential unsafe conditions. We look for any street lightings that are out, any sidewalks, any tripping hazards, anything of that nature, because, not only are we concerned about crime, but we are concerned about safety as well.” Events and large festivals like this tend to attract a lot of people who are looking to prey on attendees. “We ask that you always walk in groups, stay in well-lit areas," Moorman said. "You will see a lot of people ask you to play three-card monty or some of these other games; don’t engage in that. It is a rigged situation where they are trying to separate you from your money." In the past, the biggest issue has been unsanctioned off-campus parties and events. Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson says his officers are often the ones to be called out to them and encourages people not to attend them. “We encourage you to not attend those unsanctioned events where we typically see issues and concerns arise at unsanctioned house parties, pop-up events where the security is not in place and the safety measures are not in place, allowing for something negative to happen in our community,” said Thompson. This year, the school has more officers than ever to keep an eye on crime. Law enforcement encourages people to drive slowly around the area because some roads will be closed and there will be more cars and people walking around. Moorman also encourages people to sign up for the university alerts by texting “ncat homecoming 24” to 77295 so you can get notifications if there is a safety concern on or near the campus. GHOE kicked off on Sunday with the coronation of Mister and Miss A&T followed by a full week of festivities leading up to the homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 19, which is already sold out.
