BY SAQUAN STIMPSON (WITN22) Halloween has long been a fusion of various cultural traditions, evolving into the vibrant celebration we know today. But in Wilmington, Delaware, the holiday has taken on a unique twist with the Eternal Rest 5K Run/Walk.  Set against the historical backdrop of the Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery, this event has become a local tradition over the past nine years, attracting runners and walkers alike for a cause tied deeply to preserving the site’s beauty. Founded in 1843 by Samuel Wollaston, Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery is one of Delaware’s oldest non-sectarian burial grounds, open to all, regardless of religious affiliation. This storied cemetery spans 25 meticulously maintained acres, offering serene views and paths named after historic figures and trees.  It is the final resting place of prominent individuals like Richard Bassett, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, and Delaware’s first female silversmith, Hannah Robinson. Photo By Saquan Stimpson This year, the 9th Annual Eternal Rest 5K will be held on October 12, 2024, beginning with registration at 3:00 p.m. The course, starting in the lower section of the cemetery, takes participants through Brandywine Park before returning for an uphill finish—challenging even the fittest competitors.  Afterward, participants can enjoy an after-party featuring local favorites like El Diablo Burritos, as well as beverages including beer, wine, and sodas. What makes this event even more special is its purpose: proceeds from the run go directly toward maintaining the cemetery’s historical grounds. Participants, whether they run or walk, contribute to preserving a piece of Wilmington’s past while enjoying a picturesque fall afternoon  . With sunny skies and temperatures expected to hover around a perfect 70 degrees, it’s an ideal day to not only get into the Halloween spirit but also to engage with local history in a meaningful way.
