BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Horseback riding can be lots of fun, and as it turns out it can also be therapy. Two organizations are setting out on a trail together, making it possible for North Dakotans to have an easier journey one day at a time. From the outside looking in, it may look like Kale and Laura are having a typical horseback riding lesson at TR 4 Heart and Soul. And although they said it is the best part of their week, believe it or not, this is therapy for them. "It's building new neuropathways and telling their brain, this is how you walk," explained Katie Oakland, the executive director for TR 4 Heart and Soul. Kale and Laura have forms of cerebral palsy and horseback riding is making their lives better. "It's showing them the neuropathways. So, oftentimes after riding, people with CP or people that have difficulties walking ride for a period of time, they start walking better and their function in that department is really increased," Oakland added. For many families, this form of therapy wouldn't be possible without the partnership between CPable and TR 4 Heart and Soul. CPABLE: Ferderer family redefines the meaning of “capable” "I was just visiting with a mom from CPable. And her daughter's graduating and she sent pictures from when she was a little girl. And we were like wow she's grown up here," said Oakland. "Horses have been part of her life and it's so cool for the families at CPable to have horses as something to talk about." Despite the science behind it, insurance doesn't cover this type of therapy. But that's where CPABLE comes in, by reimbursing that cost for people like Laura and Kale who have not only physically improved but also have an emotional connection to the horses. "She's usually pretty excited when we get here and she's so mad when we have to leave," said Emma Rainey, a direct support professional. Plus, the therapy provides a different view of life, for patients. "When they are on the horse, I love that they get to look down on people because they are usually they are sitting and they look up," explained Oakland. "So, they literally have a different view from their time on the horses." A different view and a different outlook on life. If you'd like to be a part of this life-changing therapy, or if you're interested in donating or volunteering your time to help the efforts of CPable, you can find out on their website.
