BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A former Tigers football player who underwent surgery for a large brain tumor in 2023 filed a lawsuit against Louisiana State University, alleging negligence. The lawsuit filed against the school, LSU Board of Supervisors and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in August names football head coach Brian Kelly, former defensive coordinator Matt House, former safeties coach Kerry Cooks, trainers and medical staff. Greg Brooks Jr. is accusing coaches and doctors of failing to properly diagnose him after he started experiencing neurological symptoms, including dizziness and vomiting, after passing out at an Aug. 5, 2023, football practice. According to the lawsuit, Brooks showed symptoms during two other practices. Brooks' attorneys noted that athletic trainers were allowed to diagnose and treat student-athletes without consulting team doctors. They argue trainers don't have the qualifications to make medical diagnoses and Brooks' tumor would have been discovered earlier, before his Sept. 14 diagnosis, had he been referred to a neurologist. "He also would have been afforded the opportunity to research and explore treatment options, rather than get rushed to an emergent brain surgery," attorneys said in the lawsuit. Brooks' attorneys said he was given the "option" to sit out of practices and/or games but was told at the same time by coaching staff that he could lose his starting position if he did so. He played in the season's first two games before making an appointment with a neurologist. According to the lawsuit, the MRI results were shared with the LSU athletic department first. Then university agents contacted Brooks to tell him the results before his parents could travel to Baton Rouge. Attorneys said this caused emotional distress for Brooks. Les Miles moves lawsuit over vacated LSU wins from federal to state court LSU is accused of dictating Brooks' care, including choosing the doctor who would perform the surgery, without explaining to him and his family that he could explore other treatment options. Brooks alleges that he was left with "severe and permanent injuries" that have caused strokes after LSU-affiliated Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center negligently granted privileges to doctor Brandon Gaynor to perform brain surgery on Sept. 15. The lawsuit alleges that LSU knew that Gaynor did not have the necessary experience for this kind of surgery, which led to the serious injuries. Gaynor was honored as a "Geaux Hero" during the Nov. 11, 2023, LSU-Florida football game. Read statements from LSU and OLOL.
