Seneca Park Zoo welcoming two new giraffes

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Two new Masai giraffes are coming to Seneca Park Zoo!
One-year-old male giraffe Elliot three-year-old female Kura were transferred from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park based on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
This move is part of the Species Survival Plan Breeding recommendation that enables AZA-accredited institutions to manage different species.
The two giraffes will be joining Iggy, JD, and Olmsted in the tower at the zoo. The female giraffe Pippi is no longer at Seneca Park Zoo and has recently been transferred to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
As Kura and Elliot get used to their surroundings, the Animals of the Savanna barn will be closed intermittently so Animal Care teams can observe them.
Masai giraffes are classified as endangered due to fragmented populations resulting from poaching, habitat loss and human encroachment. Seneca Park Zoo has been part of the AZA Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program since its inception in 2018.
This addition follows after the zoo lost one of their giraffes Kipenzi, who passed away after suffering from a carcinoma tumor on her jaw.
