MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A Portsmouth man was arraigned Friday morning, accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in Middletown.
Anthony Martin, 48, was ordered held on $20,000 surety bail on the following charges:
Driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury
Duty to stop in an accident resulting in serious bodily injury
Failure to stop for an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle (three counts)
Obstructing an officer in the execution of duty
Resisting arrest
Reckless driving
Police said Martin sped off from a traffic stop Thursday morning, driving recklessly into oncoming traffic on West Main Road. He allegedly hit several vehicles before slamming into a fire hydrant.
He was arrested shortly after attempting to run from the crash. According to prosecutors, the passenger in Martin's vehicle was severely injured.

Police also noted that Martin was wanted by Rhode Island State Police on assault and disorderly conduct charges. He was already on probation and is being held without bail for those two separate cases.
Additionally, the judge highlighted Martin's extensive criminal record, which includes a history of missing court dates and a prior escape from custody.
Martin is due back in court later this month.
