NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- A substitute teacher at Riverside Elementary School is facing assault charges after an alleged incident with a student on Wednesday, police said. A parent reported to police that a substitute teacher had pushed her child's head toward her desk during class. The substitute teacher, 31-year-old Sharod Smithen, was charged with misdemeanor assault and was served with a warrant on Thursday night, police said. No additional details were released.
