MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – Grant funding will help the Moncks Corner Police Department support roadway safety efforts. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety awarded the agency over $121,000 to support a full-time position in the department’s traffic unit. That officer will be dedicated to traffic safety education and enforcement in the community. The funding comes as Moncks Corner PD reports a slight uptick in the overall number of crashes in 2024 compared to last year. Data provided by the agency show officers responded to 646 crashes since January, two were deadly, and 141 involved injuries. While that number is up compared to the 622 crashes last year – four fatalities and 158 injuries – the overall number of fatalities and injuries is down in 2024. “The grant represents a tremendous value to the Town of Moncks Corner and its residents and will positively impact our ability to reduce the number of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities that occur in our town,” said Lt. Robert Marchand, police commander over the agency’s traffic unit. Moncks Corner PD will participate in public information and education campaigns designed to improve driver behavior and reduce the number of traffic-related crashes, injuries, and deaths. The funding will help the department continue achieving those efforts. This year, officers have issued 2,595 citations and 2,206 warnings, and 37 people have been arrested for DUI. “We must make our roads safe for our community and those traveling through Moncks Corner. In addition to the traffic safety grant awarded this year, we will be adding another motorcycle to the traffic unit, bringing the total 3. Drivers should be aware that the primary role of this unit is education and enforcement,” said MC Police Chief Steve Young. The grant includes funding for overtime hours for officers assigned to general DUI and traffic enforcement activities.
