PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and advocates in the county are hosting an event on October 19 to share resources and shed light on the topic.  Recently, the county has seen several domestic-related homicides and shootings, not just between romantic couples, but also among family members.  In September, a mother was accused of shooting her 13-year-old daughter in the neck in Seat Pleasant after an argument between the two turned physical. American Red Cross urges people to donate amid Helene-related blood shortage Also in September, police arrested and charged a 32-year-old man for shooting and killing his brother in Capitol Heights back in August. “That is the most disturbing part. Although Domestic Violence Awareness is October,  we should be out here talking to families daily,” said Jeanette Brandon, the founder of Together We Can.  Brandon is a survivor, since then she’s advocated and provided resources for others. On October 19, Together We Can will host their annual “Stop Domestic Violence Breakthrough” event at the Oakcrest Community Center from 1-4 p.m. “My goal is to save or rescue at least one,” she said. “We will share survival testimonials through speakers, songs, and more.” Resources will also be available like the Prince George’s County Sheriff's Department, Prince George’s County Police, State’s Attorney’s Office, Family services, and more. Brandon believes speaking out will make a difference, and with the help of local officials, more can be done to drive down violent domestic-related cases.  “I'm very saddened because I feel although we as advocates work hard… more assistance from our top officials,  more support to us the advocates, and more support to the surviving families,” she said.  The Stop Domestic Violence Breakthrough event is in partnership with FRESH a mentoring group, Prince George's County Sheriff's Department, and JI Solutions.
