SAN BERNARDINO — Cajon football coach Nick Rogers concentrated on fixing his team’s errors after last week’s 34-31 loss to Beaumont. While there were still miscues on offense, Cajon had a number of big plays, rolling to a 34-0 halftime advantage on the way to a 47-0 shutout against Redlands East Valley on Thursday night. Cajon improved their record to 5-2, while REV is now 1-6. Both teams are 1-1 in the Citrus Belt League. “We showed what we are capable of doing,” Rogers said. “We said to focus on our team and not worry about what the other team does.” It might have been expected that Cajon would be potent since four All-Citrus Belt League receivers returned in 2024. D.J. Littles, who caught two touchdown passes on Thursday, leads the contingent. Other players who are experienced are B Birmingham, Jered Rennick, and Hector Garcia. “It’s only the last two weeks where we have had everyone together,” Rogers said. Quarterback Evan Powell had missed on several long passes early in the game and threw four consecutive incomplete passes in the first quarter. “I was too revved up early in the game,” said Powell, who said on a good day he could throw the ball 70 to 75 yards. “We had stuff to work out and get prepared.” Powell’s first touchdown pass was a 34-yard screen to running back Jordan White. After failing to make a first down on the next series, Powell connected on a 54-yard pass to Littles to give Cajon a 14-0 advantage with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter. Birmingham caught a 5-yard touchdown pass to complete a three-play, 55-yard drive which gave Cajon a 21-0 lead with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter. Powell connected with tight end Jackson Murray for a 29-yard pass to set up the score. Powell completed 12 of 18 passes for 284 yards before being replaced in the fourth quarter. “I like to throw long passes, but we have to connect on shorter passes as well,” Powell said. REV’s best opportunity came when defensive lineman Diego Rivera stuck up his hands and came up with an interception, returning the ball to the Cajon 29. That drive had a bitter end, however, as Cajon defensive back Zion Wallace returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown. The Powell-to-Littles connection later came up with a 64-yard touchdown pass, stretching the lead to 34-0. “This was a great team win,” Littles said. “Our receivers are bigger, faster, and stronger this year.” We played a complete game.”
