Dear Editor:The problem with the hospitals facing financial problems belongs squarely to politicians who believe in open borders. This is why St. Vincent Hospital in New York City closed. It owed one billion to its creditors, and while New York City is a sanctuary place the politicians did not want to pay the health bills of migrants that piled up over decades. In a similar vein, Arizona’s Yuma Regional Medical Center has spent over $20 million on immigrants’ health care who crossed the border under the present administration and no one is helping them out to pay those bills. When Mayor Fulop took office, one of his first acts was to make sure undocumented immigrants had access to ID in this city and he developed an office for immigrants. So of course, more immigrants came to Jersey City and used the local hospitals for medical services.Hospitals had to cut back in some areas in order to make payroll. A neighbor who works at a CarePoint hospital said her paycheck is not always on time and now layoffs are happening. So how can any hospital provide efficient services if patients do not pay their bills? Mayor Fulop pointing his finger at Christ Hospital is unfair since he added to the problem. In an editorial that appeared in Hudson County View, CarePoint Health Chief of Staff and Vice President of Marketing, Strategy & Patient Experience Justin Drew said, “… that CarePoint Health’s three hospitals serve a significant portion of this community (60% of Hudson County), with 65% percent of our patients being uninsured or underinsured and approximately 80,000 undocumented immigrants rely on our hospitals for care.”This is also the reason why itemized hospital bills paid by regular citizens are extraordinarily high, we are also paying for the health care of those who cross the border illegally. While Insight, an Islamic faith medical group said they would run two of the three Carepoint Hospitals, the public should remember, Hoboken University Hospital, was formerly St. Mary, a Catholic hospital. The hospital became secular in order to apply for some state funding. While I wish Insight success, the problem still exists – who pays the bills of undocumented immigrants? Until that question is answered, these hospitals will not have longevity. The post Letter: Blame Politicians and Open Borders for Carepoint’s Problems appeared first on Jersey City Times.
