ADDIS, La. (BRPROUD) — A home in the Sugar Mill Plantation subdivision is in the Halloween spirit. The yard is full of spooks and haunts, sure to give the neighbors a fun scare. Homeowners Melissa and Scottie Hebert update their decor daily. You can't miss it when driving by the house in the 4100 block of Stonewall Drive. The Heberts estimate that they have over 100 pieces, including swings, slides, creepy dolls, clowns, swamp creatures, zombies, bats, witches, scarecrows, Beetlejuice, a grave robber, the headless horseman and Freddy Krueger. There is also a haunted kids park, pumpkin patch and carnival. Melissa Hebert said she sometimes changes what she puts up a few times a day. She loves to top herself each year by adding more and changing it up. Fall festivals, Halloween events in, near Baton Rouge have live music, family fun The Heberts started putting the decorations up in 2019. "We started out small and have grown it bigger and better each year," they said. Melissa said Scottie made her "hold off putting anything outside" until Aug. 1. A love of Halloween runs in Melissa's family. "Probably before I was even born," she said. Her grandmother and grandfather both dressed up for the holiday. "She went all out every Halloween as far back as I can remember," Melissa said, calling those some of her greatest memories. Her grandmother passed the torch to her. Her work has helped them make new friends. Melissa said they've met a lot of people who live nearby. "I did not know any of my neighbors and now I know so many," Melissa said. If you stop by on Halloween night, there will be a haunted house in the garage, lights, animatronics, live scares and sounds as well as yummy treats, according to the Heberts. Melissa said she would add more on Oct. 31, including a few surprises. Trick-or-treating will start at 5:30 p.m. They said it did not end until after 9 p.m. last year. On Nov. 1, the Halloween setup will start being replaced by fall decor. The Heberts also decorate for Christmas, Mardi Gras and Easter. "The most awesome thing I love so much about decorating is bringing joy and smiles to all the faces that pass by," said Melissa.
