HIGHTSTOWN — It hasn’t been the best of years for the Hightstown High football team, but at least for one glorious evening it all came together for the Rams. Playing before a sizable home crowd in a rivalry game known as the War of the Windsors, Hightstown captured the coveted Mayor’s Cup by thumping West Windsor United, 26-0, on Thursday night. Entering the game, Hightstown (2-5) had scored only four touchdowns and 28 points in the six previous weeks. Considering West Windsor United (2-5) had been playing much better of late with two straight wins in which it had allowed only 13 points, there was little reason to expect an offensive explosion by the home team. Instead, that’s exactly what  happened as the Hightstown offensive line got a great push, which allowed the Rams to repeatedly gash United behind the strong running of quarterback Cole Vinson (three touchdowns) and running back Jayden Baffoe-Bonnie. “Our offensive did play very well tonight,” said Hightstown coach Ryan Fullen. “It’s been a tough start to the season for us, but we didn’t feel we were that off. It was just a matter of doing things better.” Following a scoreless first quarter, Hightstown went to work with a 75-yard drive that was greatly aided by two personal foul penalties against United. Vinson opened the scoring with a twisting 15-yard run straight up the middle. The lead grew to 13-0 on Hightstown’s next possession in which Vinson scored the second of his three touchdowns on a 4-yard run. This TD was set up by a 28-yard pass by Vinson down to the West Windsor 32-yard line and then a 20-yard run by Vinson. West Windsor nearly cut the lead in half late in the second quarter when it drove to the Hightstown 5-yard line. But on a play that started with :06 showing on the clock, United quarterback Connor Sattiraju was sacked and West Windsor never really came close to scoring again. The second half belonged to Hightstown even more. Set up by an interception by Terrance Williams that he returned to the West Windsor 17 yard line, Vinson scored his third touchdown on a 2-yard keeper. The final touchdown, which came early in the fourth quarter, was again set up by a pretty interception by Williams in which he jumped high in the air to grab the ball. This time it was Boffoe-Bonnie with the touchdown honors on a 10-yard run to complete the scoring. Vinson rushed for 58 yards on 10 carries. Boffoe-Bonnie ran for 123 yards on 21 carries and Vinson completed two passes for 35 yards. In addition to three interceptions, the Hightstown defense did a great job of shutting down jet sweeps by United back Will Carter. First down was particularly a problem for United as it repeatedly was held to little if any yardage. “West Windsor is a really well coached team,” said Fullen. “Last year we had a tough game (a 14-7 loss) against them and we knew we would have to play well to beat them. I think we did.” They sure did. In fact, anyone who saw the Rams for the first time in this game would have never guessed they had just one previous win and a paltry four touchdowns.
