WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The labor department released its final inflation report before election day with good news for Americans, but here in Hampden County consumers say they just aren't feeling the relief. "Inflation goes up and down but my paycheck ain't going up. You work to either pay your bills or you work to pay a bill," shared Brendan McCarthy. Inflation is at its lowest since President Biden took office in February 2021, but residents like Brendan, a local welder, shared with 22News that it's not the case for his family. "Child daycare and stuff like that, you know it costs as much for child daycare as it does for rent," shared Brendan McCarthy. In the final inflation report released by The Department of Labor, data show price increases in things like housing, energy, and groceries are slowing. Pain at the checkout continues to be a common feeling amongst locals. "I usually come in and spend anywhere from $20 to $30 every two to three days," shared Thomas Wiater. Thomas retired 13 years ago, however now works as a school bus driver to stay afloat in this economy. "You know I wish the meat was a little bit more lighter on the pockets," shared McCarthy. He shared with 22News off camera that the cost of baby food is hurting his family. One trip to the grocery store for baby food costs about $270 and only lasts three weeks. Although data from the Biden-Harris administration shows growth is slowing for consumer goods, it's not necessarily felt in Hampden County. National polls show the cost of living and inflation are a top concern for voters heading into November's election.
