ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – There is a changing of the guard coming at the New Mexico Activities Association. After 12 years as executive director and 20 total years at the NMAA, Sally Marquez announced her plans to retire. NMAA associate director Dusty Young has been voted by the board as Marquez' successor. During her time as ED, Marquez played a crucial role in the the overall growth of the NMAA, its participants and number of athletics/activities. Some noticeable additions include girls wrestling, powerlifting, esports and marching band. Marquez credits all of the athletic directors, superintendents and educators for helping her achieve her ultimate goal of bettering the lives of high schoolers in New Mexico. "In every decision we make, its about the good of kids and making sure that we're consistent in making sure we are following the ideals of sportsmanship and giving these kids opportunity," said Marquez. "I can tell you activities and athletics in the schools are vital." Young will assume the role of Executive Director on November 1. "Huge shoes to fill," said Young. "At the same time, what she's done has really set up this association for good things for a long time. So, just can't wait to take on that leadership role and do what's best for the state of New Mexico."
