VOLCANO, Hawaii (KHON2) -- A suspect was arrested following an overnight standoff in Volcano on Hawaii island. Nearby residents said the standoff lasted about 24 hours. She said police started surrounding the typically quiet Mauna Loa Estates subdivision around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. OCCC work furlough escapee back in custody "Between yesterday and today there was a lot of gunfire, there were two separate booms that happened, one at 4 p.m. yesterday, and then one around 7 a.m. this morning," she explained. "We don't know what those were, but lots of gunshots, there was lots of talking over the intercom, and then drones flying over the house." Hawaii island police said they responded to a service call in the area of Nahelenani Street and Jade Street and were still on the scene as of 8:30 Thursday morning. "It was kind of intimidating for this area," Dorow said. "About 9:30 this morning we had officers all around the house, the gunfire was getting closer." She said one officer came to the door and told her to evacuate. "It was probably within about 20 minutes, by 10:10 a.m., we got a phone call and they said the situation had been handled, and to go ahead and come back home," she continued. Hawaii island police said the suspect is in custody. They added one officer was hospitalized after the suspect fired at them.
