TOPEKA (KSNT) - If you're looking for a way to get more candy this Halloween, the numerous trick-or-treat and trunk-or-treat events across northeast Kansas will offer just that. Trunk-or-treat events across the Sunflower State are offering a different way to get the candy, if door-to-door trick-or-treating isn't ideal for your family. Many local organizations are planning safe spaces to trick-or-treat. Rosie Nichols, a spokeswoman with the Topeka Police Department (TPD), told 27 News while trunk-or-treat events give a different Halloween environment, parents and caretakers know if trunk-or-treating events or door-to-door trick-or-treating is best. Topeka shelter saw more than 300 adoptions in September "Safety should be at a forefront of all decision making to get the most enjoyment out of the holiday," Nichols said. "We want our children and community members to look back on these experiences as positive interactions in the neighborhoods and that will only happen when we are all being safe together." Nichols said when trick-or-treating, or going to trunk-or-treat events, it's important to be mindful of your surroundings. Walking in groups, being in well-lit areas, using sidewalks and communicating plans with parents and adults are some good things to keep in mind to make enjoying the Halloween season easier.
