ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – We know the Balloon Fiesta isn't just for adults. Every year it starts with balloons taking off at schools across the metro. This year, there's something extra special for Balloon Fiesta's youngest fans.  One of the event's biggest days this year just so happens to be a day off for tens of thousands of Albuquerque kids. This year, APS students get what many hope for the last Friday of Balloon Fiesta is a day off. It's something that lined up perfectly with the district's fall break. “We're also proud to be a partner with the Balloon Fiesta to support as much as we can the calendar so that our students can enjoy their fall break, their much-deserved fall break and visit the Balloon Fiesta,” said Gonzalez. It's been a couple of years since the last time it happened. The day something APS said is a great learning opportunity to understand not just ballooning but also New Mexico culture. “Teachers do a really good job of incorporating Balloon Fiesta into their everyday lessons. So the kids are getting that roundabout math, science, even social studies community into their learning every day,” said Jessica Lacour, Assistant Principal for Dolores Gonzales Elementary. The district can't guarantee a "Fiesta Friday" off every single year because of how the academic calendar lines up with the days of the week. Knowing that parents and students said they're happy to get an opportunity to head out and see New Mexico’s favorite holiday“It's been great to have that coincide with the fiesta, the fall break. It has definitely given us more opportunity to go when it's not so crazy on the weekends.”
