ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – There are still a few days to experience this year's Balloon Fiesta. If you're not looking forward to all the traffic, Albuquerque police are reminding people there's another way to get to the park. Sasarita is just one Balloon Fiesta Park visitor who decided to walk along the trails leading to fiesta instead of driving.  Albuquerque Police Department's Open Space Unit is assigned to patrol the trails to Balloon Fiesta Park. They also respond to 311 calls during fiesta and citywide all year round asking those who take the trail to keep a watchful eye.  “Those 311 calls we get in from citizens and those that use the bike paths regularly help us be able to pinpoint where we're having issues,” said Sgt. Brian Shannon with APD’s Open Space Unit. Police said there haven't been any incidents during fiesta this year along the trails. A major trail corridor leading to the park, comes up from the south, along the Northern Diversion Trail, which stretches nine miles from the University of New Mexico to Balloon Fiesta Park, with connections to other trails along the way. “This path in particular that leads to Balloon Fiesta you can access it through multiple locations. It goes Alameda, Paseo, all the way south down towards UNM. Then there's a part of the trail that goes towards the Foothills as far east as Tramway and Central. You can start there and connect to this trail,” said Shannon. APD said the views from the trail are great for those who want to experience fiesta from a different perspective. “It's really nice riding to Balloon Fiesta Park and you get to see all the balloons going up and it's a pretty neat experience aside from just driving here,” said Shannon.
