BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Local politicians and officials have reacted to the death of Ethel Kennedy, the wife of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, on Thursday. Gov. Maura Healey said that Kennedy was an inspiration for her resilience and compassion: I’m deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ethel Kennedy, who inspired us all with her resilience, compassion and faith. She was a passionate advocate for human rights and leaves behind a remarkable legacy of public service. My heart goes out to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all who knew and loved her, during this difficult time. Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Steve Kerrigan said she made history as her family’s matriarch and as an advocate of social justice: Through Ethel Kennedy’s long, storied life, she both lived and made history.  Whether it was as her family’s matriarch holding her children together in the wake of her husband’s death or as a champion for the causes of the environment, social justice and human rights, Mrs. Kennedy was an example to us all of grace, dignity and strength. In her decades of work as the founder of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, Mrs. Kennedy left an indelible mark on millions around the world who may never know her name but will feel her impact for generations to come. But Mrs. Kennedy was also a fun, funny and fantastic woman who dedicated herself to her family and her country.  A Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, her mark on the American landscape has been significant and her memory will live on in our hearts. Mrs. Kennedy was determined that we all live purpose filled lives and certainly led by example. Ethel Kennedy was a true American icon and the Massachusetts Democratic Party join Jacob and I in offering our most sincere sympathies to her family and those who loved her.
