MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A Portsmouth man with outstanding warrants led officers on a chase, striking several vehicles in Middletown Thursday morning, according to police. Police said officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on West Main Road just after 11:30 a.m. The driver, identified by police as 48-year-old Anthony Martin, sped off shortly after officers obtained his license and registration. Police said records show Martin was wanted by Rhode Island State Police on assault and disorderly conduct charges. Officers chased after Martin, who was driving recklessly down West Main Road. Police said Martin hit two vehicles — one near West Main and Woosley roads, and another by the entrance to the Home Depot shopping plaza. He eventually crashed into a pickup truck, which was turning from West Main Road onto Browns Lane, before slamming into a fire hydrant and street signs, according to police. Police said Martin attempted to run off but was taken into custody. Both Martin and his female passenger were taken to Newport Hospital for evaluation. No one else was injured. It's unclear exactly what charges Martin will be facing at this time. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Breaking News SIGN UP NOW
