KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Just after the Kansas City Royals won their 2015 World Series Championship, plans for the Urban Youth Academy were announced. Kansas City is one of nine stops throughout the United States where there's a baseball academy through Major League Baseball in underserved communities, according to the Executive Director of Administration for the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy, Donease Smith. "We get them in the door through baseball and softball, and once they are in here, we can give them the other resources that can help them and support them to be the leaders of tomorrow,” Smith said. Royals season on the line in ALDS Game 4 at Kauffman: Preview Since the Urban Youth Academy’s inception in 2018, Smith says around 60 thousand people have taken advantage of its services, which are available for kids five to 18 years old. “The Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy, the signature baseball and softball program of The Kansas City Royals Foundation, has long been the neighborhood-level expression of our commitment to community impact,” the academy's website reads. Its services are free, and some programs are off the diamond, including financial readiness, college preparedness and FAFSA training. "We want to support our boys (Royals), and I think this an opportunity for the kids to take pride in a place and get that experience that they normally wouldn't experience anywhere else,” Smith added. Urban Youth Academy’s Fall Bash is this Saturday, October 12 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be food trucks, games, vaccinations and more.
