INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indy woman is facing a felony count of resisting law enforcement after police say she threatened her rideshare driver with a knife and led officers on a chase after stealing the car. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 2:05 p.m. on Oct. 5 to the 3000 block of N. Franklin Road in response to reports of a stolen white Toyota Highlander. Mitthoefer Road. The victim told police the customer instructed them to drive to a laundromat on E. 38th Street. When they arrived, court documents state Shaw went inside the building where she reportedly told the driver she would retrieve some money. Shaw returned to the vehicle a short time later and the driver told police they began driving to a location on N. Shadeland Avenue after being instructed to head in that direction. Court documents said the driver recalled seeing Shaw reach inside a small black bag while visibly agitated. The suspect reportedly told the driver to bring the vehicle to a halt as the driver told Shaw they were driving her to the location they provided earlier. Shaw then proceeded to pull out a knife and allegedly place it near the driver's throat after becoming "agitated", according to court documents. A physical altercation occurred before the driver managed to pull the vehicle into the parking lot of a gas station near the intersection of E. 30th Street and N. Shadeland Avenue. Once they arrived there, the driver exited the vehicle as Shaw allegedly stepped into the driver's seat and took off. The driver confirmed to police that their wallet and credit card were still inside the vehicle when Shaw allegedly took off. Shortly after, the victim received a ride from an uninvolved individual who dropped them off at a Shell Gas Station on 30 N. Franklin Road. Once there, the victim called the police to report that an armed carjacking had occurred. The incident left the Lyft driver with minor injuries, including bleeding on the right side of their face. The following day, an officer with the Lawrence Police Department observed a vehicle driving northbound on N. Post Road that matched the provided description of the vehicle that was reported as stolen. The officers then attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of Pendleton Pike and Mitthoefer Road. Shaw is described in court documents as allegedly ignoring their flashing siren lights and continued driving away from the officers. The pursuit eventually concluded in the area of N. Post Road and Briergate Court following the successful PIT maneuver executed by IMPD patrol vehicles. Once the vehicle came to a complete stop, police alleged that Shaw refused to exit and comply with officers' demands to exit the vehicle with her hands raised. As officers searched the stolen vehicle, they reportedly located a large knife which was confiscated and brought back to the IMPD property room as evidence in the case. Shaw was detained and brought to the Marion County Jail where she was preliminarily charged with a level 6 felony of resisting law enforcement. According to online court records, Shaw is set to appear in Marion Superior Court 25 for a pretrial conference on Nov. 14 at 8:30 a.m.
