Looking in through the Chapel Street window glass at an empty Elm City Market. Elm City Market has officially closed its 360 State St. location — in advance of the grocery store’s planned move in January to a smaller space a few blocks away at the “Square 10” development at the former Coliseum site.Signs posted to the doors of the market’s long-time former home currently read: “Elm City Market is closed + will reopen in January.”Beneath that message is a map showing the spot of the market’s former home at 360 State, and its future home at the new 200-unit apartment complex on the rise at 275 South Orange St.“Thank you for your patronage. We will still have the freshest produce, meat, seafood, deli, prepared foods, cheese, bakery, and coffee bar,” the sign promises.Elm City Market first opened in 2011 as a co-op on the ground floor of the landmark downtown redevelopment at 360 State. The Independent first reported in August that the grocery store planned to shut down its 360 State location in October and move to a roughly 3,000 square-foot new commercial space at the on-the-rise “Square 10” development.“Ultimately, it’s too big a space for us,” Elm City Market CEO Kurt Luttecke said at the time about the roughly 10,000 square feet the market has occupied at 360 State. Also in August, Beachwold Residential’s Gideon Friedman, whose company owns 360 State St., said that while Elm City Market had decided not to renew its multi-year lease after October, “we are actively marketing the space to other operators and are confident that a new tenant will continue to provide services to downtown and neighboring residents.” Friedman did not respond by the publication time of this article to a request for an updated comment about whether or not the landlord has found a new tenant for that space. An Aug. 22 post to Elm City Market's Instagram account.
